I have not blogged these last few weeks as I have been out every day campaigning. It was a good effort , but the public went with the three Dems. I finished 6 out of 6. I am disappointed, but realistic. In this city it is an uphill battle with the Rep, endorsement since they are outnumbered almost 3-1. I felt the candidates I ran with were outstanding and it is a real shame none were elected.
I am proud of my campaign and deeply thankful for all my supporters. This will be the final blog as I will take down this site shortly. Maybe there will be another time... not ready to decide yet.

WFP event
On the night of Oct 4th after the candidates forum I was approached by Jim Welch from the Working Family Party to invite me to a candidate night on Friday Oct 14th. I wrote it in my calendar.
Unfortunately I never received a confirmation or time until Oct 9th. The time was 7:30pm and I had a conflict with a family event at that time. Had it been earlier- even 6:30- I would have been there.
It is too bad, since I am not avoiding or ducking anybody. I will be at the Olde Judge Mansion (in the same neighborhood) Tuesday Oct 18th from 5:30-6:30pm and everyone is welcome to visit and exchange ideas or ask questions.

Tom Wade letter
Earlier this week the Record published a letter authored by Democratic County Chairman Tom Wade. In the letter, Wade basically stated the Democrats used an effective screening process and found quality candidates while the Republican process was clearly flawed and took rejects and underqualified people to comprise their council slate.
This is more typical partisan nonsense. The Republican cnadidates are well qualified and are consiencious, concerned citizens. Why take cheat shots at them? The Democrats outnumber the Republicans in enrollment by more than a 2-1 margin, they should be able to take the high road and win every time.
I authored a rebuttal to this nonsense which will appear in the Record soon, possibly on Sunday Oct 16th.
What really saddens me is that for the first time the city has new faces and young faces running, which is great. Why behave this way? Is it intended to discourage people from coming forward unless you have gone through the "partisan" ranks.
His assertion that Republican candidates are getting lots of cash is ridiculous. We are fund raising on our own and have less to spend than our Democratic opponents. The Republicans have no city chair and only an acting county chair at this point-we are working largely on our own or as a group. NO ONE IS PULLING ANY STRINGS or GIVING US TALKING POINTS.
Try to read my response. I make my point. Wade is an embarrassment to the Democratic party.

Candidate Forum
The second candidate forum took place Tuesday Oct 4 in the former School 12 in the South End. All 22 candidates were in attendance. The event drew a good crowd.
Each of us was given a minute to make remarks about ourselves and why we were running, then there were six questions we answered in a rotating order. The moderator was my former editor, Lisa Lewis, who is still the editor of the Record.
I felt the evening went very well. For the most part everyone behaved with civility, although there were some boos early on, which fortunately were not repeated.
The questions ranged from city hall to sustainability and quality of life issues.
I maintained the position I have held all along that moving city hall to the Dauchy Building is not a good idea. I continue to feel city hall should be relocated to a building which is not now nor ever was on the tax roles. This would keep both the Dauchy and Verizon properties on the tax roles which is in the long term the best solution for the tax payers. A recent suggestion by councilman Mark McGrath to look at School 1 in Troy is very appealing to me.
With respect to sustainability, I attended a composting workshop hosted by RPI and left very impressed. Getting food waste out of the garbage stream makes sense. The challenge is going to be the initial start-up costs. It will take years to get the money back and begin to feel a real savings. The same is true of solar panels on government buildings. Another great idea, I just hope the initial costs can be found via grant or partnerships. All these ideas have merit, and I am open to them.
Quality of life issues are the toughest. Code enforcement is working hard and according to one of them I spoke with at length the current mayor put some teeth into waht they do. Despite this, there are still problems. One of them occurrs when a bank forecloses. They need to hire a local management company to maintain the property. One homeowner in South Troy is livng next to a home which has been vacant for six years and is slowly deteriorating right next to the home she has lived in for 62 years.
This situation is terrible and we have to find a way to address this. The new ordinace requiring banks to report who is responsilbe for the property is a step in the right direction. Every home in the nieghborhood suffers when a home is left vacant for too long.
The other thing often left unsaid is the responsibility of parents. Many domestic police calls are for matters which have more to do with parenting than anything else. The city can't raise children. Parenting is the single most important job in our society and it is a shame everyone does not understand this.
I look forward to attending other evenings like this one, but everyone should feel they can send me an email question or idea anytime.

Campaign update
It has been much too long since my last blog, so I will post three this morning on different topics. I have been going door-to-door and scheduled three hour long appearences around the city to try and meet and listen to as many people as possible.
I was at Graham's Cafe in Lansingburgh Oct. 10th and Flavor Cafe on the 13th and I will be at the Olde Judge Mansion Oct.18th from 5:30-6:30pm.
I will be at chowderfest today and will continue to be in as many places as possible. It really isn't much different than when I was a news photographer. I was all over the city then only in a different capacity.
My billboard is up at the junction of River & King Streets. It will be up until election day. Thanks to my wife, Deborah, for the design.

UFA endorsement
I did receive the firefighters endorsement making me the only candidate who has been endorsed by the Police, firemen and retired firemen. I worked as a news photographer alongside these men & women for more than 31 years and I have great respect for the work they do. I am proud to receive their endorsement.
Ryans Wake
I held a fundraising reception at Ryan's Wake on Wednesday and it was well attended. I want to thank Chris Ryan for his support and help and Francesca, who provided food. It was a good evening and brought out several supporters who had been unable to attend other events. Thank you to all.
It was a good week at Ryan's Wake as it was the location for a film on Monday. The period piece features "Legs" Diamond in a saloon, which will be a backdrop to an interview with William Kennedy telling "Prohibition Stories". Chris Ryan and his brother Matt were both in the film. I shot still images and had a great time. The WMHT production crew was first rate and really captured the atmosphere of the bar.

Endorsements
I received the PBA endorsement which came as somewhat of a surprise since I was never invited to an interview. The PBA President told me it was because the guys know me and believe I really care about the city and will be my own person if elected. I am honored and hope to prove worthy of their endorsement.
I was interviewed by the Firefighters' who have not yet announced thir endorsements. I was given a fair shot and that is all I seek. Regardless of their decision, I am second to no one in my respect for the job they do in protecting our city. I joked that Troy is so good at putting out fires it was hard as a newsphotographer to get there before the flames were already knocked down.
Public safety is crucial if we are going to grow our city and attract businesses and people. They will not come to Troy if they do not believe it is a safe place to live, work or visit.
I made the following promise to the firefighters, which I make to all the citizens: I will always be willing to listen, and to be fair (there are always two sides) and to be honest. I am sure there will be times when we will agree to disagree, but it should not result in a long standing grudge as seems to have happened in the past. Just because we may disagree does not mean we need be enemies. I have been married 27 years and my wife Deborah and I disgree regularly but I love her and I am happy to still be with her. That is exactly how I hope everyone behaves going forward.

Uncle Sam parade
My team of volunteers , who helped distribute balloons during the Uncle Sam parade Sunday 9/18. My daughter, Rachel and honorary daughter, Jessica, are missing from the photo since they were already distributing balloons.
I marched in the parade with other candidates and enjoyed the gorgeous Sunday. It was a good parade, one of my favorites from my days as a news photographer. The crowds seemed a little smaller than in the past which is too bad since being the home of Uncle Sam is a significant tribute to our city and something we can build on to attract tourists and others to our city.
I also attended the gravesite ceremony on Saturday where Marge Derguarian acted as mc. She did a great job and the ceremony was spot on in remembering the man who became an American iconic figure.

9-1-1 Memorial
I was asked to photograph the dedication of the new 9-1-1 Memorial in Lansingburgh on Sunday in a newly created park North of the 112th Street Bridge. It was an honor. It was a great day.
The memorial looks great and is a fitting tribute to the devastating attack on America and Troy's assistance in many ways in the weeks that followed.
Jim Gordon spearheaded the effort and should be recognized for his outstanding concept and execution. Everything starts with an idea, but it then takes hard work and on organized effort to get anything done. He and his committee got it done.
I have long felt and have written how important I feel it is to have every entry point to our city sparkle. You get one chance to make a first impression and people entering Troy should know we take pride in our city and take care of it. Having this memorial greet people who enter Troy from Cohoes is a significant improvement over what used to be there. This is an outstanding use of this space and a profound improvement.
Congratulations to everyone who worked to make this project a reality and hopefully it is indicative of how we as a city can move forward developing ideas and bringing them to reality in the future.

Election
There are 63 days left until the election. I will be going door-to-door 4 or 5 days a week until the election. I plan on being at the candidates night on Oct 4 in the old School 12. I will gladly speak to any group interested in having me regarding the election or my work as a photographer.
I still have to make a living and after a slow summer, it looks like my photography work is picking up which is good. While my schedule provides me the flexibility to devote the time to being a council candidate and hoepefully a council person, I still have work obligations like everyone else. I am not retired!
I hope to see you soon and if you have any questions, ideas, or concerns let me know.

Restaurant Tour
Tuesday night's restaurant tour of 12 downtown establishments was a huge success. Sharon Smith, The Executive Director of The Troy Boy's & Girl's Club runs this terrific fundraiser. On a beautiful night there were a lot of people out supporting the Club and visiting Troy's restaurants.
The Dinosaur, Ryan's Wake and Brown's Brewing were unable to participate as intended due to clean up from the flood. I love all three places and wish them well as they recover from Hurricane Irene.
Even without their participation the 12 that were able to go forward did a tremendous job. Troy has without a doubt the finest eating establishments in this entire region. Congratulations on a great night to be in Troy.

Flood
The flood Irene dumped on our region reminds me of the flood I covered as a photgrapher for the Record in January 1996. That flood was largely about ice, but the water overflowed the banks in a similar manner. The next day cars parked behind the Quayside apartments were covered in sheets of ice. It was an amazing scene.
While it is certainly a mess, the situation could have been much worse. We suffered very little wind related damage and few power outages. We have also been blessed with great weather since the storm.
My heart goes out to all who have suffered damage particularly the homes on Brunswick Road which felt the effects of a mud slide. But, I have great faith in the people of our city. I'm sure there will be many who help clean up and life should get back to normal fairly quickly.
Our police, fire and DPW workers did an outstanding job as they typically due under difficult conditions. A tip of the hat to all the city work force.

ValleyCats fundraiser
Many thanks to everyone who came out to support my fundraiser with the ValleyCats Wednesday evening. They provided a fantastic picnic "spread" and the game was outstanding with the Cats winning 7-4 on an 8th inning grand slam. What a perfect finish to a perfect night.
I am planning a couple more events and will post when I have established dates.

TRIP
Along with candidates, Jim Gordon, Billie Jean Greene and Debra Lockrow, I met with Pat Madden and Hilary at TRIP Tuesday morning.
I felt it was a good meeting which was very informative. One of our cities most serious ongoing problems is vacant buildings and negligent absentee landlords. In a college town there are going to be a lot of rental units and probably therefore many absentee landlords.
TRIP is a tremendous asset in dealing with these issues. They currently own 45 buildings and manage about 200 rental units. They do pay property taxes on these buildings of close to $200,000 a year.
They have a landlord training program and a screening process for prospective tenants. They also help people become homeowners with a lengthy education process.
I was impressed and I certainly believe in their mission of trying to help people as they seek to become homeowners. Their counseling and educational programs are invaluable and I foresee working closely with them should I be elected. We must address the housing issues in our cities as they have a tremendous impact on the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

Voters thoughts
While going door-to-door on the East side it is clear voters are concerned about the future of city hall and taxes. Many people expressed frustration with taxes and some indicated it was why so many homes are for sale in Troy.
I have commented extensively on city hall and I remain opposed to a move to the Dauchy Building. As for taxes, that is a challenge. The key is abviously broadening the tax base. We have too many empty buildings and store fronts in the city. We have to market and "sell" our city better. Filling these spaces should be a high priority. Not only would it increase sales and property tax revenue but it would bring badly needed jobs into our city.
This will be a challenge, but TROY is worth the effort and everyone needs to get on board. The almost constant bickering which has been going on among our elected officials the past two years is NOT how to market our city. That is why this election is so important. I hope people turn out and I hope they think about the people they are voting for.

Great Saturday
I walked VanderHyden Estates with Dan Mahoney Saturday morning. It was great to meet so many different people, who seem truly concerned about issues in Troy. I then went to a neighborhood block party on Stow Ave.
When I worked for the newspaper I covered these types of events regularly and I realized yesterday that is what I miss the most about being a news photographer. Interacting with different people and traveling all over the city to different events. I'm there now as a candidate, which is different, but I still enjoy it. I learned and played ladder toss for the first time. I love these types of games and I had a great teacher in a young man, Cameron. In a decidedly unpolitical move I did beat him at the game. I couldn't help it, he is a good teacher and I was enjoying the event. I hope as I go forward I can continue to maintain my sense of humor and enjoy these types of events. I am always eager to discuss issues or more serious topics, but you have to enjoy yourself as well.
Which was the case at the Beat Shops fund raiser for Hope 7. Listening to the incomparable Jim Barrett sing requires a sense of humor. He is a terrific community minded citizen, and as he told me "You don't see any cats or dogs around when I'm singing do you!" A great day in Troy!

Finance Meeting
Last night's finance committee meeting of the city council was an eye opener for me. It is now clear what is driving councilman Bill Dunne's desire to move city hall to the Dauchy Building. He despises Mayor Tutunjian and the current building's landlord Sam Judge. I don't know all the history which has lead to this, but I know it is NOT how you make important public policy decisions. You should never make an important decision driven by emotion- particulary anger. We need sound judgement, common sense and reason as we make important LONG-TERM decisions.
I remain opposed to the move, while continuing to acknowledge the obvious short term benefit of the move. The problem I continue to have is two fold: 1) it is not a building built as an office building and will not work well as a city hall. There is no adequate space for a council chambers and I am sensitive to parking concerns area business owners have expressed. 2) The building will experience a significant increase in property value when the $32 million project on the former city hall site a block away is finished in about five years. This valuable piece of real estate MUST stay on the tax roles. Plopping city hall on this stretch of commercially desirable real estate just as it is about to increase in value is short sighted and could cost the taxpayers millions in tax revenue over the next fifty years.
This is a mistake and trying to shove it down the citizens throat as this council heads out the door is just plain WRONG.

Council For Economic Development
I attended the public meeting hosted by RPI for the Capital Region Economic Development Council Thursday. It is an impressive group of business, academic and political leaders from the 7 county capital region which is preparing a Comprehensive Funding Application seeking money the Governor has made available to the regions around the state who have the best ideas on how to attract business and people to their area.
They have a website www.capitalregionopenforbusiness.com which has several surveys on it. I encourage everyone to take the surveys which take about ten minutes each. Public input is being sought so please provide it. I took the surveys and they make you think, which is always a good thing.

Wedding
On a personal note I was able to introduce my family, wife, Deborah; daughter, Rachel and son Brian Tuesday night at the candidate's forum.
This is a BIG week in our family's lives. Rachel is being married on Saturday to "Bucky" Johnson. They met as maid of honor and best man at a wedding last year. It is a great story.
They will be married at the Gardner Earl Chapel in Oakwood with the reception to follow at the Country Club of Troy. Music will be by "The Heaters" who I have known for years. We are very proud of our children and extremely excited for Rachel. This is the big event in our lives this year, the election a distant second.
I probably won't post again until after the Big Day, but I will continue to keep track of events in our city and I will comment on them soon after the wedding.

Candidates forum Voter fraud
Tuesday night's candidate's forum held at the TAUM Center in the city's South End went well. Despite a heavy downpur there was a respectable crowd. Clearly people are intersted in this election. They should be. We will be electing a new mayor and at least four new council people so IT IS a BIG ELECTION.
I felt I did a decent job addressing many of my views but it is challenging trying to describe yourself and your vision for Troy in 3 minutes and then to answer questions in one minute segments. I feel the voters will have excellent choices this fall and the new council should be very different in tone and substance from the current version.
No one addressed the "elephant in the middle of the room", voter fraud. The day before city clerk Bill McInerney was arrested and charged with ten felonies. Remember he was appointed by the council Democrats and served at their pleasure. Most disturbing was the fact these charges stemmed not only from the 2009 primary but also from the elections in 2007 &'08. If this is true it means there was a clear pattern of voter fraud in place for three years which I find outrageous. It is one thing to try and manipulate third party lines, which may be unethical, but it is entirely different to forge people's signatures and vote for them.
We need to end this investigation and bring to justice the people who committed crimes and more importantly violated the public's trust. It is inexcusable.
Even new faces on the council will not make this matter go away until everyone involved has finally been charged. I urge the special prosecutor to resolve this soon for every Troy resident's sake.

City Hall
At last night's council meeting the council by a 7-1 vote is gon to seek to seek a $2.2 million bond to move city hall into the Dauchy Building on River Street about a block North of where city hall left two years ago. The business community opposed the move. I have opposed the move for months.
With about 58% of the property in this city tax exempt we should not be taking a valuable piece of property like the Dauchy Building off the tax roles forevermore. The notion you can just sell the building in a few years is ridiculous. that would mean a fourth location for city hall in less than a decade.
The ideal move would be to a piece of property which has never been on the tax roles, like School 12 in the S End; St Patrick's Church; St Peter's Church or opposite the central fire station next to Kennedy Towers. All these locations are available. In the location next to Kennedy Tower you would have to build a new structure entirely. That, however, may be the best move long term.
A new structure would be energy efficient and built to be a city hall with a parking lot and a council chambers. In one of the great ironies in the move to the Dauchy Building- despite being bigger than the current city hall it does not have a space for a council chamber which would seat more than 50 people.
I hate to see either the Dauchy property or the Verizon property (city hall's current location) come off the tax roles. They should both be on the tax roles generating revenue for our city.
The Mayor will likely veto the resolution so this isn't over yet. Stay tuned-it's Troy

ValleyCats fundraiser
Yesterday I signed a contract with the ValleyCats to conduct a fundraiser on Aug 24. It includes a pre-game picnic, cap, and game ticket for $25. Since I am working with the Cats I was offered the opportunity to throw out the first pitch. Within hours an e-mail was sent to the Cats asking if all candidates would be extended this invitation. They don't have enough games left to do this.
I do NOT want to put them in an awkward position. They are a first class operation and were not trying to play politics. I will not throw out the first pitch. But, to those who think I couldn't reach home plate I say HA! I was a pretty good athlete and pitched in Little League (admittedly 42 ears ago).
Enough on the pitch, join me for what should be a fun evening.

Candidate Forum
Tuesday August 9th from 6-7:30pm all the at-large candidates and the mayoral candidates will gather at the TAUM Building 392 Second for a forum. I encourage all to attend. This will be a good opportunity to get a sense of which candidates have the vision for Troy and ideas and experience to make it happen. I look forward to the evening.
I was initially a tentaive reponder to this event since a very significant event in my life is occurring on August 13th. Our daughter, Rachel, will be married. She is a terrific young lady and she is marrying a fine young man so we are very proud and pleased. My wife , Deborah, has worked very hard along with Rachel to get everything organized so I should have no problem attending the forum. She will be married at the Gardner Earl Chapel in Oakwood with the reception at The Country Club of Troy.
See you on the 9th and hope for good weather for the 13th.

Dauchy Building
In one of my first posts I explained why I oppose moving city hall to the Dauchy Building. I spoke against the idea in May and a letter I sent to the Troy Record was published the end of May.
Yesterday I joined a group of downtown business people who are against the proposed move which now would apparently cost more than $2.2 million. Councilman Bill Dunne who has been the driving force behind this move continues to support it and believes people don't get it. He says the city will have to spend $2.2 million just to properly maintain the building anyway.
No the city does not. The city could sell the building for $1.35 million to David Bryce which would save the city $2.2 million make it $1.35 or be about $3.5 million ahead plus the building would be restored to the tax roles since it would be privately owned. This $3.5 million should be plenty to purchase and renovate the current location. I have said before I like the current location but not the building as is. However, if it could be renovated to improve the entrance area and create a council chamber then perhaps it would work long term.
In any case, the city stands to do better in the long run getting the Dauchy property on the tax roles.

National Night Out
Both the South End and Uptown neighborhood groups hosted terrific family events Tuesday on national Night Out. The South End gathered in front of the Burden Iron Works Museum. Volunteers offered face painting, food, balloons, coloring books and general fun for everyone. They even featured a meatball eating contest which I missed. Reportedly candidate Dan Mahoney could have easily won except he wore a nice shirt and didn't want to soil it.
The Uptown group gathered at Ingalls & 7th where a band rocked and food and fun were had by seemingly everyone. The image of the night was without a doubt Councilman Mark McGrath walking around with an African-American infant. Kissing babies...guess it is election season.
The Broadway Brew hosted a meet-the-candidates night which brought many candidates but not enough public. It was a good idea and I'm sure there will be many more similar events. I will attend all that I possibly can.
It was a great night to be in Troy and proved the neighborhood groups are gaining momentum and are starting to really make a difference. I remember covering these events while working for the paper and they were nothing like what I saw last night. Congrats to all the volunteers.

Weekend
I spent the last four days photographing the 12 yr old Cal Ripken Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament in Clifton Park. I did the same age group two weeks ago in the state tournament hosted by N Colonie. It is challenging, since I set up and process and print on site so parents leave with an 8x10 or 5x7 print of their child in competition. A colleague, Nate Whitchurch worked with me in Clifton Park. We shot twenty games and input more than 2,000 images. A lot of work.
I am impressed by the involvement of the parents, many of whom made this trip their summer vacation. Teams traveled from Maryland, Delaware, NJ and Penn. The quality of play was at times amazing. I had forgotten what 12 year olds can do. Very impressive.
This weekend also marked the conclusion of a life changing experience for my brother-in-law, Matt LaClair. Along with a mutual friend, Mike Stratton, the two finished the Appalachain Trail. They hiked straight through starting in late March in Georgia. They finished the nearly 2,200 mile hike in Maine four months later this Saturday . I tip my hat to them. What an experience. Their blog site is PorterandPace (trail names).

City Clerk
Yesterday I joined council at-large candidate Jim Gordon in calling for an audit of the city clerk's office before a final disbursement check is issued to Bill McInerney. I don't necessarily believe Mr. McInerney has done anything wrong in the clerk's office, but his sudden unexplained resignation for what I believe relates to the ongoing voter fraud investigation, prompts my concern.
I believe this council must begin the process of restoring the public trust, and this is a step in that direction. Mr. McInerney should welcome an audit as it would enable him to move on with a clear conscience at least as far as the operation of the clerk's office.
The elephant sitting in the middle of the room is the voter fraud scandal which has left a dark cloud hanging over the council for the last year and a half. This is a self inflicted wound for Democrats. They apparently broke the law and are finally being held accountable.
Since one councilman is under indictment and at least two others are being investigated I feel very strongly this council should not nominate any replacement for the clerk or any other position. There is an election in three months-let the new council make appointments.
I want to focus on the future and keep my campaign positive, but I can not ignore altogether this issue which has haunted the council and embarrassed our city.
Those involved should have resigned while admitting no wrong doing more than a year ago. Staying on the council mearly creates an unnecesssary distraction. The honorable thing to have done for the good of the council and the city would have been to step down. Those who did not are demonstrating their selfishness and arrogance. I hope the voters are watching. Elected officials should be held to a higher standard. The cry "I've never been convicted" is NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Lansingburgh Neighborhood Watch
Police Chief Tedesco and Mayor Tutunjian both attended a special meeting of the Lansingburgh Neighborhood Watch Wednesday night to discuss the rash of burglaries (38) in the past month in the Lansingburgh area.
The police believe there are several different individuals involved. No one has been injured and no big items have been taken. They look for cash, laptops or jewelry. Others are stealing metal to the degree that they are entering yards through alleyways and taking people's grills.
Currently the chief says there are many more police patroling and they are committed to catching those responsible. They have put out the word through Project Impact and are getting help and cooperation from the sheriff's and state parole board.
It was a well attended meeting and the primary message was CALL THE POLICE if anything appears wrong. Catching thieves in the act is difficult particularly when there is no pattern. The residents will play an important role in this ending.
I was impressed by the number who attended and I hope this is resolved soon. People should not feel unsafe in their own homes.

South Troy
I attended the South Troy neighborhood meeting last night after having gone door-to-door in the area campaigning. The people have similar concerns as the people in Lansingburgh. In the Burgh it is Fifth that is frequently a drag racing street while in the South End it is First which seems to attract speeders. One family expressed legitimate concern for the safety of their children.
One resident was disgusted with the drug trafficing and crowds in the street at night, which apparently ended in a brawl just the night before. It is sad when a resident feels like a prisoner in their own home. The city recognizes the problems and a significant improvement program is underway, but some of these problems are tough to handle.
Another resident spoke of an absentee landlord who had tennants who literally throw their garbage out of the their third floor window with some of the trash actually hanging from a tree. Making people behave respectfully and responsibly is difficult, but clearly the city needs to come down hard on both the tennant and landlord for persistent chronic problems. There has to be accountability.
Every neighborhood in our city is important and matters. There needs to be more police patroling and an even stiffer response in the South End. The folks in this section of the city will find me in their corner as they try to improve the quality of life.
They are planning an event at the Burden Iron Works Museum for National Night Out Tuesday Aug 2. I hope many people take advantage of this and get to know their neighbors.

Cooling stations
Kudos to the Mayor and fire department for setting up cooling stations. I drove past the one at Ingalls & 7th last evening and there were still children enjoying the water. Much was made of the fact the pools opened a couple days late last summer, I hope as much is made this summer of the fact the pools opened early and now cooling stations!
Campaign
As we go forward I am still in constant need of volunteers. To volunteer contact me through gmail tomkillipsfortroy@gmail.com
Like any campaign, donations are always needed and appreciated. You may send donations made out to KillipsforCityCouncil to: Tom Killips, 142 Oakwood Ave., Troy NY 12180
Several events are being planned for August and September. Follow this blog or facebook (Tom Killips) for details.
I am still looking for people willing to allow signs to be placed in their yards or business windows. If you are at all interested please let me know.
The campaign season is begining to heat up-not as much as the recent weather-but soon.

Rockin on the River
My wife Deborah and I went to last night's Rockin On the River which featured The Emerald City Band and Super Four, both "Troy" bands. Joe Mele played with Emerald City and I'm told he plays with about five bands including his own-amazing talent. Despite the heat there was a good crowd and it was great to see the waterfront full of people on a summer evening. Remember the not to distant past when on weeknights in the summer this was a pretty quite place.
I truly believe this block between the Collar City and Green Island Bridges is the BEST entertainment block in the region. Decks behind the Brew Pub, Ryan's Wake and the Dinosaur and great food at Jose Malone's and the River Street Cafe... it doesn't get better than this.
Yet, it will get better with the proposed construction of a Bombers Restaurant on the corner of King St!
This is exactly what I think will continue to happen along our waterfront. As the actual waterfront becomes more crowded and popular one block in the empty stores will start to fill creating even more shopping and entertainment diversity in our city. After many years of talking about the waterfront and its potential to drive economic growth in Troy it is finally happening and everyone can see it.

Democratic Mayoral candidate
The Democrats are going to formally announce today that Lou Rosamilia will be their endorsed Mayoral candidate to face Carmella Mantella.
I ran into Lou while going door to door with Dan Mahoney and Jim Gordon on Monday night. Lou was out collecting petition signatures. He is a decent man and carries none of the political baggage his predecessor was hauling around.
The citizens of Troy will have a choice between two quality individuals this fall which ultimately is good for everyone.
Welcome to the race!

Public safety meeting
I attended last night's city council public safety committee meeting. The mayor's office had no representative nor was the police chief, John Tedesco, present. Apparently partisan political bickering between the mayor and the safety committee chairman Bill Dunne once again reared its head.
This is exactly what I am running against. Regardless of which party you are in, this committee could not address public concerns effectively without the chief being present. The primary topic was the behavior of RPI students in the Beman Park area. Residents are concerned that students routinely leave O'Learys Bar at 4am drunk and engage in loud obnoxious behavior such as a contest to see who can fill a cup faster while urinating in the middle of 15th street.
OLearys owner was present and felt the police needed to be harder on these students who apparently get public intoxication tickets (occasionally) which only carry a $25 fine. He agreed to close earlier on a trial basis. I suggested, following up on Bill Dunne's thoughts, that perhaps the council could ask all the city taverns to consider closing earlier on a voluntary basis. They seem to feel that much of their revenue comes between 1am and 4 am. I believe nothing good ever happens on the streets after 2am. I further believe that if all the bars and taverns had last call at 2am and closed at 2:30 the patrons would adjust and would likely arrive earlier and drink from say 11pm-2am instead of 1am-4am.
I certainly don't want to take revenue from bar and tavern owners, many of whom I know, but the quality of life in the neighborhoods is also important and the two sides must work together.
I doubt anyone wants to live on a street where at 4am every Thur,Fri or Sat you can predict a large group of drunken young people yelling and having urinating contests in the middle of the street.
There are other topics that I think might have been discussed if the chief had been present. Last week, at a Lansingburgh Neighborhood meeting I attended the chief sat and answered questions for two hours covering a wide range of topics. I felt he was honest and direct in his responses. It is a shame he wasn't present Tuesday night, as I believe he could have contributed significantly to the discussion.

The Frear Park Fountain
I spoke at the city council meeting to congratulate the city and specifically former councilman Jocko Mahoney, who did most of the work, on restoring the fountain in Frear Park. It has not operated for about four decades and was most popular for skateboarders in recent years. Now, not only is the water flowing but it is lighted at night and looks fantastic.
I believe this type of effort is one of the keys to attracting people to our city. Allowing fountians or buildings, parks or the approach to fall into disrepair and stay that way creates a very negative impression of our city. While there is no immediate measurable economic return on investing in this type of repair, it is essential to the way people view Troy. Maintaining our public areas sends a clear signal that we take pride in our city and that we value our history and our monuments, and parks.
The approach sat in disrepair for years and was a hideous eyesore looking down on Troy. Now, the approach draws interst and impresses people. It took a community effort in conjunction with RPI to get it done, but this is what can happen when we pull people together with a common vision or goal. We are a city which can get things done and it definitely makes a difference in the way people perceive Troy.

Radio with Paul Vandenburgh
I visited my former employer the "Record" newspapers to visit Paul Vandenburgh who hosted his morning radio show from the newspapers' community room. Paul squeezed me onto the show between Bob Mirch and Carmella Mantella. It was a good experience. I'm sure I didn't fire people up as well as Bob Mirch who has an incomparable ability to push the right buttons to get people going.
Like many, he questioned my sanity in running for office in Troy. Trust me, I have given this much thought and I am running with my eyes and ears wide open. I believe in Troy and am very optimitstic about the city's future, but we must continue to attract new businesses and economic development. We must also promote our city in a more positive manner. Every resident of Troy should be proud to call Troy thier home and part of that is being proud of your elected officials. I think that is a problem at the present time and must change in this fall's election.

Fund Raiser A Success
My campaign launching fundraiser Tuesday June 21 was very successsful. Revolution Hall and Carrie Harkin did a terrific job as did the band "The Heaters". Everyone had a good time and I thank you all for joining us.
We are planning a couple more fundraisers and I will keep everyone posted.
My thanks also to Ed Vigeant for his banner and sign creation.

Flag Day Parade
I have covered the Flag Day parade two dozen times as a newsphotographer, but this year was the first time I was in the parade and went the entire route. What a great crowd and a tremendous parade. Kudos to all on the committee who work so hard every year to make this patriotic event happen.
I rode on the AquaDuck with Captain Harry Von Wormer and Mayoral candidate Carmella Mantello. It was a great experience. Cpt. Harry has been training me to operate the Duck, and for now I am better off driving the trolley. The Duck is tough to operate and he makes it look easy.

Honoring our Veterans
For nearly two decades I photographed the annual Memorial weekend service at Oakwood Cemetery. It has always been one of my favorite events because the Lansingburgh Veterans, working with the Boy Scouts, plant flags next to the grave sites of veterans. This year I went not to photograph, but to assist and I was honored they welcomed my help. It is a fitting tribute and is exactly what Memorial Day should be about. Thank you to the veterans and the scouts who do this. They should feel very proud of their efforts.

Don't move city hall to the Dauchy building!
Below is a link to a letter to the Troy Record published Tuesday May 31 in which I explain why it would be a mistake to put city hall in the Dauchy Building.
The letter has drawn some comments. I know I am not a real estate tycoon, but then there are none currently on the council either. I also realize the properties I mentioned receive property tax breaks from a PILOT program. They still are paying property taxes however the full amount is phased in, usually over 20 years, but sales tax revenue is not effected.

It's time to stop fixing blame, and start fixing problems
The purpose of this site is to share my ideas and to listen to the concerns of Troy residents. After more then 31 years covering the city as a photojournalist, I am very excited about the future of our city.
The constant partisan bickering of the recent past must subside! The interests of the people must be more important than partisan politics.
The residents should be proud of their city council. I intend to listen to people who are willing to share their ideas.
